Configuring the LMS Course Filters

Summary: This document will outline how to create and configure the Course Filters used in the eReserve Plus integration record.

Course Code Filter

An important part of the LTI Setup for connecting the LMS to eReserve Plus is the configuration of the Course Code Filter. The Course Code Filter allows each offering of a course in the LMS to match the Base Code for that course. With the Course Code Filter in place eReserve Plus will be able to automatically associate existing Reading Lists from previous offerings to each new offered reading list within eReserve Plus.

NB: It’s important that this Course Code Filter is correct otherwise it will lead to incorrect display of reading lists. If you are not comfortable with creating a regular expression then please contact the eReserve support team to assist.

Example Course Code Filter

To configure this feature it is important to understand the naming scheme in place at your institution when provisioning new learning spaces in the LMS.

For example LAWS6215 is taught in Semester 1 each year. At Elysium University, the LMS team created an offering for the LAWS6215 course this way.

We can see in this example that the Course Codes in the LMS are created using a standard:

<Year> underscore <Faculty> underscore <Course Code> underscore <Semester>

The Course Code Filter can be written to match on the third field separated by underscores. In this example, the matched string would be LAWS6215.

When eReserve receives an LTI handshake from the LMS, it will receive the string 2018_LAW_LAWS6215_SEM1, however with the Course Code Filter in place it will match the third field and only store LAWS6215 in eReserve Plus.

Next time the course is offered, say in 2019 Semester 1, the same process is followed and eReserve Plus will again associate the new offering with LAWS6215.

In this way, Academics will have access to the previous readings associated with this course and will be able to quickly and easily reference and use the resources in those prior lists.

Course Code Matching Field

The majority of Learning Management Systems will send the Course Code via the LTI Context Label and the Course Description will be in the LTI Context Title. If the Base Code is only available within the Course Description this option sets which LTI field is processed by the Course Code Filter.

Course Code Match Flattening

If set to yes all text captured by the regex is joined together in the resulting Base Code.

Course Name Filter

The LTI Course Name Filter allows unnecessary detail and other content about the course to be removed from the course name displayed within eReserve Plus.

When utilised the LTI Course Name filter allows the display of course long names to be modified to fit the display requirements of the reading list within eReserve Plus. Long course names can modified to better fit the layout, course code and reading list display within the eReserve Plus interface.

Example Course Name Filter

The example description follows the format:

<Course Code> <Course Long Name> - <Time Period>

The Course Name Filter can be designed to remove the Course Code and Time Period which in eReserve Plus will be represented by the Course Code and eReserve Plus reading list name. The matched string for the Course Name would be Civil and Criminal Procedure.

When eReserve receives the LTI handshake from the LMS, it will receive the string LAWS6215 Civil and Criminal Procedure - Semester One 2018, however it will only store and display Civil and Criminal Procedure.

Course Name Match Flattening

If set to yes all text captured by the regex is joined together in the resulting Course Name.

How to Configure Course Filters

To set the filtering simply edit the associated integration record from the eReserve Admin Interface then complete the Course Code Filter and/or Course Name Filter field. To create a filter you will need to provide a Regular Expression You can use tools like Rublar to test your regular expressions before applying them to your integration record.

To access the Course Name Filter in the Integration Record Configure > Integration

1. Select the integration record;
2. Click Edit;
3. Add the expression you have created;
4. Click Update.
